St Vincent Place has been our most prestigious and historic development, building on the final original gap site in the New Town, and so completing James Craig’s original vision. Comprising of two blocks, separated by a wide landscaped pedestrian zone linking Fettes Row with St Stephen Street, this radical design solution won 11 national awards.

Working closely with planners and conservation groups, it was decided that the two blocks should be very different in design from each other. The south block had to blend with the Georgian terrace of Fettes Row, so has a traditional stone façade and large sash and case windows, with the glazed penthouses the only external nod to modernity. The north block, however, is unashamedly contemporary in order to contrast rather than compete with its neighbour, the majestic St Stephen’s Church. Though the block is more angular and regimented than its sister building, it maintains a dialogue through the use of the same sandstone and tall elegant windows.

Following our philosophy of choosing the most appropriate architect for an individual project, the two competing styles led us to appoint two different practices: Oberlanders for the south block and Reiach and Hall for the north. ?? years in the planning, design and construction, we are proud of our contribution to the New Town’s history.
