The appropriately named Printhouse saw the conversion of the former print works of George Waterson & Son into 19 loft-style apartments. This imposing red sandstone building is a much loved local landmark and sits beside the Water of Leith in Canonmills.

The building’s façade features three tiers of large windows, which flood the interiors with light and give beautiful views over the Water of Leith. It would have been easy to have added an extra floor to maximise the number of apartments, however, we chose to retain the generous ceiling heights of the original print rooms, to create a loft-style feel to the open plan living room/kitchen areas. Where possible, we kept on show the original cast iron columns which supported the floors, adding authentic detail to the stylish contemporary interiors. The ground floor was devoted to a secure private car park for the residents.
